98 Memory Lane : Architecture Design Story - Part 1

Architecture is not just physical form, but also on how we define space, interpreting spatial concrete in terms, which making the space created by human or society has more meaning than it should. In every Disaster, there will be redevelopment or reconstruction, but most of them forget of what is the real meaning to rebuild or reconstruct a place. Disaster creates shock, generating disintegration in physical evidence, moreover psychologic that people cannot identify on the same way as physically does. Something more metaphysic are reliable rather then something we could perceive directly. This approach, sometimes can be seen from the results of the architecture itself, naturally or intentionally.

This project will try to refine the role of architecture on defining memory, placing memory, making memory, and recalling the memory on a person. This project synthesizing form human psychology on remembering event throughout their life, whether its a happy memory or the bad one. The role of an event on placing their memory to people's mind became important, how long the tragedy occurred, its process, the actor, and the physical evidence - its impact on architecture.

In this project, the evidence was traced by its debris. Every disaster comes with evidence whether psychologic or physically. The debris can give a new meaning after it happened (the disaster). I took note from architect that criticized memory in such way, that the memory become one with the person who saw it and experienced it. Lebbeus Woods on War Architecture discussed memory as something to experience in weirdest way that can be felt by many people who was not involve in those event. Later on Daniel Libeskind's Museum (Jewish Museum) began the new approach on perceiving memory. Something to felt all over our body, The whole physical experience on journey throughout camp.

These type of memory perceiving began the journey of me decoding the evidence of Mei 98's Riot to be memorial of many people, but in the way that not arouse angriness, disappointment or sadness. In a way to be felt, to be remember, to be something which is always attached to people's mind on learning that this event cannot happen again. How the memory planned on Architecture to be memorized and to be felt in more advance way, psychologic such as loci method of journey and physically like debris, and other interpretation of things to the other meanings.
